The Centre’s physical location was originally a resort that operated from the early 1900′s until 1978, when it was closed and the property was purchased (with funds from Devonian Foundation and the Province of BC) and turned into the Tribune Bay Provincial Park.
In School Districts 69 and 71, outdoor education has been an integral aspect of the total curriculum. In the development of outdoor education, it was natural that programs would evolve which would require more than one day to complete. As a result, camping and multi-day outdoor education programs became a major focus. The use by and subsequent vision of a few dedicated educators of the present location for camping and studies culminated with a Park Use Permit in Tribune Bay Provincial Park in 1983. Since then, the Tribune Bay site has been the single most used site for outdoor education for local School District students and very popular for youth programs in the summer months.
The major renovation of the old resort and building it into a fully functional outdoor education facility, by the Society, was done between the years 1989 and 1999, with most of the concentration after 1994. After 1994; every building was either rebuilt or renovated, new buildings erected, the camping areas further developed, program areas built (climbing tower and ropes courses) and the infrastructure was redone (power, septic and water). The Society fundraised and orchestrated the entire renovation/building with the help from many partners that included the Federal and Provincial Governments and their agencies, six local Rotary International Service Clubs, foundations and many corporate and private donations.
